Last month, on May 28th, the 19th edition of the XIX international fishing tournament "Cosme Alberto Magaña" took place in Isla Mujeres, with over 70 participating boats.
This annual event, which began in 2004, brings together captains, sailors, and fans from Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Puerto Aventuras, Cancun, Yucatan state, and even Florida. With over $850,000 pesos worth of prices on offer for the winners.
The event's goal is to promote the tradition of sportfishing while maintaining the tournament as one of the biggest events in Quintana Roo. It takes place during a good catch season, with participants able to catch mahi-mahi, tuna, and marlin (which is a catch and release fish). The tournament spans two days from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at which time the scales close.
This event is popular in Isla Mujeres, stimulating the local economy and bringing families together around the boats and fishermen, who excitedly present their catches to the spectators. Dancing and live music create an electrifying atmosphere during the tournament.
In 2024, the winners were Captain Uriel Valerio and his crew aboard Kristen Tywan's boat the "HAPPY WARRIOR" from Isla Mujeres, who received a prize of $350,000 pesos.
