Join visitors and locals alike at Acción Isla’s Eighth Annual Earth Day Cleanup, this Friday, April 25th, from 9AM until 1:30PM.This community-wide initiative is dedicated to protecting the natural beauty of Isla Mujeres. Since 2016, this cleanup effort has brought together scuba divers, snorkelers, swimmers, and beachgoers to remove waste from the island’s shores, surrounding ocean, and inland areas.
The 2025 cleanup is set for Friday from 9AM, starting at the Malecon near the Isla Mujeres letters. Volunteers will work both above and below the surface, collecting litter to prevent it from harming local ecosystems. Dive shops and certified divers will lead the underwater cleanup, while land teams focus on the beaches and coastal paths.
The cleanup has come a long way since it began in 2016, when 62 volunteers collected 650 kilograms of trash. By 2019, the event had grown significantly, with more volunteers removing over 2,000 kilograms of waste. In the years since, participation has continued to increase, while the volume of trash collected has gone down, a promising sign of progress and awareness.
Acción Isla’s Earth Day Cleanup is more than a one-day event. It’s part of an ongoing commitment to sustainability, conservation, and community empowerment. Each volunteer who joins is contributing to a healthier environment and helping build a culture of care and responsibility that benefits both residents and the island’s future.

Why Earth Day Matters
Earth Day, observed every year on April 22nd, serves as a global reminder of our shared responsibility to protect the environment. Originating in 1970 due to rising concerns about pollution, it has since grown into a worldwide movement, with over a billion people across 190 countries taking part in activities each year. The theme for 2025, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights the collective role we all play in safeguarding the Earth and its ecosystems. Local events, such as Acción Isla’s cleanup, provide a meaningful way to contribute to this mission and make a positive impact in our own communities.
