Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, March 4, 2023.-The municipal president of Isla Mujeres, Atenea Gómez Ricalde, presided over the 506th anniversary of the discovery of the island, stating that in her Government the conservation and rescue of traditions and customs that give roots and identity to the municipality, which has a great historical legacy that must be transmitted to future generations of islanders. The mayor recalled that Isla Mujeres is a tourist destination with a great history and various tourist attractions, making it a multicultural place, so she invited the island people to work for the prosperity of the municipality so that the benefits reach everyone. In this way, those attending the anniversary celebration enjoyed an extensive artistic and cultural program in which a Mayan show was presented, the flamenco duet by the Senderos flamenco dance company, likewise, the mayoress gave recognition to the chronicler life of Isla Mujeres, Fidel Villanueva Madrid. The discovery of Isla Mujeres dates back to the year 1517 during an expedition led by the Spanish Francisco Hernández de Córdoba who, after sailing from Cuba and avoiding a storm in a hitherto unknown sea, woke up one day with the joy of seeing land appearing again. before their eyes part of the Mayan province of Ekab and the island they arrived at was called Isla Mujeres due to the large number of figures with female forms that they found in what was one of the sanctuaries of the Goddess Ixchel. The anniversary celebration was attended by Vice Admiral CG DEM Enrique Flores Morado, Commander of the Ninth Naval Region, the general director of Youth, Culture and Sports, Martha Patricia Sánchez Trinchan, members of the Cabildo, businessmen and directors of the City Council.
